i read "the five people you meet in heaven" today.probably a good book to read if you feel like your going no where in life. it shows how your life effects others and vise versa. it makes you feel kinda empty inside at some points, and then all warm and fuzzy at others.
i'd give it about an 8/10.very good!

Okay, so I'm reading this book called Nil. It's about an island where teenagers appear without explanation and have one year to escape, otherwise they perish. The plot is nice, and the side characters are neat, but kahchdnxnejdj. Aired fjekxm re the protagonists useless. It's split narrative, between stereotypically girly teengirl and Island Vacation Ken Doll. There is so much potential for interesting character development, but the author disappointingly drops the ball and makes blank slates who teens are supposed to project themselves onto and relate to, but it hardly makes for development. It's almost insulting, so much so that when another character speaks, you sigh in relief, now that you get a break from their incessant dullness.

I think it's worth it. I'm still not done, so I'm trying to see if anything happens. It's a great book, but that one flaw is glaring.

Reading Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston. It's okay. If I were Janie I would have killed Joe Starks way earlier. That makes no sense taken out of context, but if you read it you might agree.

I just finished The Mind Within the Brain. It was pretty good. Very compelling description of how many aspects of life and healthcare are misrepresenting that our brains are composed of structure and function relationships that compose our mental experience. Not much on personality though.
Re: Favorite books, reviews, recommend a book
Sounds good. I think I'll look for it at the library in a few days. I'm probably going to finish Reality is not what it seems: The Journey to Quantum Gravity first.AcutelyAware wrote: ↑Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:16 amMy favorite book is The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm. It was assigned in my senior sem. existential psych. course in college and is still my essential guide for having genuine loving relationships. It is a book that always strikes good conversation as well.![]()

At the moment I'm really interested in russia and russian culture and in this rush i finally started reading Dostoyevsky. I don't get the "it's a brick"-part. It's beautiful! It's psychological portrait of both man and his environment, he spills it all but manage to weave it into a story with a "feverish" language. It's art
thnk u synapser for "the mind within the brain" and Rovelli, will get them.

Yes it's lovely! The way raskolnikov changes, how the guilt makes him behave and how we follow this "anti-hero" around (sorry for lack of proper words) and the question he raises in the reader about dubious things. I can't read as fast as i would like cause I'm afraid of missing out. I think he manages to "set the mood" by the rythm of his language. There are so many levels of good and right now my own words only seem to smudge it. Have you read his "notes from the underground" (maybe not correct translation)? A goal would be reading it in original but it seems like a hard language in translation, might have to move...
Have you read Tolstoy?

I haven't read Tolstoy but I heard he's good.
Ernest Hemingway once said: "Dostoevsky was made by being sent to Siberia. Writers are forged in injustice as a sword is forged." I think that's why Russia has many good writers, since they have a history of suffering under terrible rulers.

Yes i believe it's true (if it can be), suffering either breaks you or it brings out brilliant things and the writers in russia made agony into art. Is Hemingway another favourite writer of yours? I haven't managed to embrace "the old man and the sea"
